The Berkshire Sail Training Centre

a line of Oppies ready for launchingThe Berkshire Sail Training Centre has undergone many changes since it first opened its doors in 1964 when a group of schools in central Berkshire purchased two Tepco 12 sailing dinghies and arranged a lease at what is now known as Theale Water. Since then the centre has gone from strength to strength and with a fleet of over 25 dinghies, a full time centre principal and community sport coach the future is bright.

Currently there are some 8,200 person visits per year to enjoy training at all levels within the RYA scheme. Many of the users come as members of school groups, youth organisations and disabilities groups. The centre is overseen by a board of trustees, all of whom have strong links with local schools. It is the earnest desire of the trustees that the centre's facilities and opportunities should be easily accessible to as many people as possible.

Structured programmes of study enable each individual to achieve their full potential in a stimulating environment. Students have the opportunity to gain the qualifications of the Royal Yachting Association and to progressively build on their skills and techniques. The centre offers a variety of activities including raft building, sailing, powerboating and hopefully windsurfing in 2009. Groups can arrange for weekly sessions, activity days, or just one off taster sessions.
