Field Studies
The Centre has two seminar rooms equipped with OHP, whiteboards, etc., which are available for use as a base for field projects by groups to enable them to make full use of the rich local resources. The amenities are of interest for projects in the sciences and humanities, and are an outstanding resource for artists and photographers. Picnic and toilet facilities are available.
The Centre is based on a worked out gravel extraction area, previously a grass strip airfield, used as an emergency strip for Woodley, as well as a training base. Part of the runway drainage still exists.
The Kennet and Avon Canal runs along the northern boundary of the site. This stretch of the canal features two locks (one of them turf sided) and a swing bridge. Near the swing bridge there is a mill with associated streams and sluices (a private dwelling), while a short distance west a cantilever bridge crosses the canal. The tow path along the canal is generally in a good state of repair and provides easy access to the various features. 800 metres from the Centre there is a gauging weir on the Holy Brook, which rejoins the canal east of the turf lock.
The A4 road and the railway run parallel with the canal through the valley, while the M4 forms the eastern boundary of the site.
The water area is a popular site for several varieties of aquatic birds including Herons, Coots, Grebe's, Cormorants, Turns, Ducks, Swans, and Egyptian & Canadian Geese allowing fantastic opportunities for bird watching.
What ever your area of interest we will do all we can to try and accommodate your needs. Please contact us to discuss your requirements further.
